What we do

Challenge

A large, Ford vehicle assembly plant was located at the remediation site in Genk between 1963 and 2015, and had gone through several stages of expansion.

Several pollution cores that require remediation have been identified on the basis of soil surveys:

  • Core 1: BTEX (and mineral oil) in the solid part of the earth and in groundwater;
  • Core 2: BTEX (and mineral oil) in the solid part of the earth and in groundwater;
  • Core 3: Mineral oil (and BTEX) in the solid part of the earth, in groundwater and as a floating layer;
  • Core 4: BTEX (and mineral oil) in the solid part of the earth, in groundwater and as a floating layer;
  • Core 13: BTEX in the solid part of the earth and in groundwater;
  • Core 29: BTEX (and mineral oil) in the solid part of the earth and in groundwater.

The first phased soil remediation project will focus on the core approach to the pollution. A master plan for the redevelopment of the site is currently taking form. This redevelopment focuses on opening up a new industrial site and a zone for the development of water-related activities.

Solution

Following a public tender, De Vlaamse Waterweg (the Flemish waterway authority) awarded the contract for this complex project to a temporary consortium ‘THV FORD 2020’, in which we are a member alongside ACLAGRO, MOURIK and AERTSSEN.

We performed preparatory works by selectively demolishing the buildings above ground and we cleaned and removed underground structures and storage tanks.

The contaminated soil is excavated and removed for processing at our soil recycling centre GRC Zolder.

We carried out the soil remediation works in accordance with the project requirements and the specifications of De Vlaamse Waterweg. The work is also monitored by the temporary association ABO-TRACTEBEL

Used technology:

Our scope includes:

  • Asbestos removal in the buildings
  • Above ground and underground demolition of existing buildings
  • Cleaning of all underground storage tanks, sewers and basements
  • Taking stability measurements by installing sheet piling up to 11 m below ground level
  • Selective excavation of 111,000 tonnes of contaminated soil
  • Installation and maintenance of a drainage and groundwater purification system (flow rate 40 m³/hr)
  • Excavation of the entire project zone and sieving of the released soil and replenishing it in the remediation cores
